PHOTO ARCHIVE TO BE DISPLAYED CONTINUOUSLY ON THE ELLIPSE AND AT THE CORCORAN GALLERY IN WASHINGTON, DC, FOR PUBLIC REFLECTION ON THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF 9-11 ATTACKS.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, AUGUST 19, 2002
For this special first-anniversary exhibition on the Ellipse, adjacent to the South Lawn of the White House, images of New York, the Pentagon and the crash of Flight 93, will be displayed on several 13' by 18' video walls. The event is planned to begin at 8:00 pm on the evening of Sunday, September 8th and will then run each day from 7 am until 10 pm through the evening of Thursday, September 12th.
"The video wall images will be shown without comment and without attribution, in the same truly democratic and nonpolitical fashion that has characterized all of here is new york's exhibitions since its inception," said Michael Shulan, one of the founders. "The intent is to commemorate and memorialize these tragic events, showing what happened from as many different angles as possible, as an aid both to healing and to grasping the human dimension of what took place."
"We are constantly encouraged by the substance and volume of response to our exhibits and our website. It is becoming one of the most viewed archives in history," says Charles Traub, also a founder of this democracy of photographs, which has attracted more than 100 millions hits on the website and attracted more than 1.5 million visitors throughout the world.
In addition to the two exhibitions in Washington, D.C., other public displays of images from the here is new york archive are now on view or will open to coincide with the first anniversary of 9-11 in Paris, London, Zurich and Tokyo, as well as Berlin, Dresden, Dusseldorf and Stuttgart in Germany. A one-month exhibition in Arles, France just concluded. Exhibitions in the United States now underway or opening next month include displays in New York City; Troy, NY; Boca Raton and Tampa, Florida; Louisville, KY; Los Angeles; Marietta, Ohio; and San Diego.
